Sheffield United name Nigel Adkins new manager

Sheffield United have appointed Nigel Adkins as the club's new manager.

Former Scunthorpe, Southampton and Reading boss Adkins, 50, was unveiled as the Blades' eighth manager in as many years at a news conference at joint club owner Kevin McCabe's London office in Mayfair.

Adkins has signed a three-year contract and replaces Nigel Clough, who was sacked along with his six-man coaching staff nine days ago following the club's League One playoff semifinal defeat to Swindon.

Andy Crosby has been confirmed as assistant manager and Dean Wilkins as first-team coach.

Adkins, out of work for just under six months after being sacked by Reading in December 2014, said his "end-goal" is promotion to the Premier League.

He has a proven track record, having twice guided Scunthorpe to the Championship and led Southampton to successive promotions from League One to the Premier League in 2012.

A club statement said: "Nigel Adkins has agreed a three-year contract to become Sheffield United's new first-team manager.

"The 50-year-old, who has won promotion from League One on three occasions, twice with Scunthorpe United and most recently with Southampton, will be joined at Bramall Lane by Andy Crosby (Assistant Manager) and Dean Wilkins (First-Team Coach).

"The incoming trio will work alongside the existing backroom staff already contracted to the club and will commence their roles with immediate effect."

Bradford boss Phil Parkinson and out-going Brentford manager Mark Warburton had been among those linked with the job.

The Blades had an approach to talk with Parkinson turned down last week and it is understood the South Yorkshire club were not willing to trigger the get-out clause on the Bradford boss's contract, which has a year left to run.

Adkins retired as a goalkeeper at the age of 31 after stints at Tranmere, Wigan and Bangor City.

He began his managerial career as player-manager at Bangor and was later promoted from club physio at Scunthorpe to manager following the departure of Brian Laws in November 2006.

Adkins left Scunthorpe to succeed Alan Pardew as manager at Southampton in September 2010 but after two and a half years in the role was replaced by Mauricio Pochettino.

Adkins was named as Reading manager two months after being sacked by Southampton, having led them from League One to the Premier League in successive seasons, but was unable to prevent the Royals from being relegated from the top flight.
