Shanghai SIPG boss Andre Villas-Boas gets eight-game touchline ban

Shanghai SIPG coach Andre Villas-Boas has been given an eight-match touchline ban by the Chinese Football Association.

The decision means the former Chelsea boss will not be present on the sidelines for the remaining games of the Chinese Super League season.

Villas-Boas was sent off during the 1-0 win over Beijing Guoan last week for making a gesture towards the referee, bringing him a second ban of the season and a fine.

"After viewing reports from the referee and the match coordinator, video evidence and written explanations from the involved parties, it is clear Andre Villas-Boas insulted the referee with gestures," a CFA statement said.

"Chinese football is developing based on the principals of fair play and sporting spirit while also carrying the responsibility of educating the public and spreading general values.

"Victory is a common target of all participating parties. However, it cannot be achieved by sacrificing the rules of the game.

"Respecting the rules, the referees, fans, opponents and the game are the requirement of all participants."

Villas-Boas will be absent from the dugout for his side's final four games of the season as they attempt to close a four-point gap on leaders Guangzhou Evergrande.

Earlier in the season, he was banned for two games after using social media to show support for SIPG midfielder Oscar when he was given an eight-game ban by the authorities.

Villas-Boas recently avoided an Asian Football Confederation ban after comments he made following Shanghai SIPG's Asian Champions League win over Guangzhou Evergrande but was hit with a fine.

His team remain in contention to complete a domestic and international treble, having reached the final of the Chinese FA Cup at the weekend.
