Sevilla sack Vincenzo Montella and name Joaquin Caparro as interim boss

Sevilla have sacked manager Vincenzo Montella following a run of poor results, replacing him with Joaquin Caparros until the end of the season.

Montella took the helm following Eduardo Berizzo's dismissal in December but could only secure 11 victories in 28 matches, and his fate was sealed following Sevilla's 2-1 defeat at Levante on Friday.

Caparros has wasted no time in bringing in his own staff for the final four La Liga matches of the season, with Antonio Alvarez announced as his assistant, while former player Carlos Marchena, Paco Gallardo and Luci Martin are among his backroom staff.

The 62-year-old will be unveiled to the media at midday on Sunday.

Sevilla have dropped out of the European places as a result of a nine-match winless run in all competitions and sit three points behind sixth-placed Villarreal, who have a game in hand.

Montella guided Sevilla to the Copa del Rey final and defeated Manchester United to reach the quarterfinals of the Champions League, but their recent slump has seen the Spanish side dismiss their second manager of the campaign.

The former Italy international is expected to make a "public goodbye'' to the players and fans on Sunday, according to the club's official website.
