Sevilla coach Eduardo Berizzo to undergo surgery after cancer diagnosis

Sevilla coach Eduardo Berizzo will undergo surgery on Tuesday to remove a tumour just a week after being diagnosed with prostate cancer.

The Argentine is expected to take some time off work but there are no plans for the 48-year-old to stand down.

In the meantime, the Sevilla first team will be coached by Berizzo's assistant Ernesto Marcucci, starting at home to FC Cartagena in Wednesday's Copa del Rey round-of-32 second leg.

A club statement read: "Sevilla coach Eduardo Berizzo will undergo surgery on Tuesday afternoon for the prostate adenocarcinoma that was diagnosed several days ago.

"The return of the Argentinian coach to the Sevilla FC bench will depend on the surgery and his post-operation recovery.

"Sevilla FC trust that his return will be as soon as possible. His second in command, Ernesto Marcucci will take his place in the bench."

The Spanish club announced Berizzo's condition after their 3-3 comeback draw against Liverpool last week.

Berizzo was also on the bench on Sunday as Sevilla hit back from 2-0 down to win 3-2 at Villarreal and remain fifth in La Liga, 10 points adrift of league leaders Barcelona.

Prior to Sunday's kickoff, Sevilla players wore shirts with the message: "Strength coach" in support of Berizzo's fight against cancer.

Sevilla host Deportivo in La Liga on Saturday before a Champions League clash at Maribor on Dec. 6, with a draw enough to see them qualify for the round-of-16.
