Sevilla appoint Oscar Arias as new sporting director

Sevilla have appointed Monchi's former right-hand man Oscar Arias as their new sporting director, the Spanish Primera Division club have announced.

The Andalusian outfit have opted for continuity when deciding the successor of Monchi, who announced last month he was stepping down after 17 years as Sevilla's sporting director.

The 51-year-old Arias joined Sevilla in the summer of 2013 and helped Monchi plan for the side's last four campaigns.

A club statement said: "Sevilla's Administration Council has selected Oscar Arias, in charge of the club's Elite football, as the club's sporting director.

"All of Monchi's team members will remain in their positions.

"Since joining the club, Arias has always been in permanent contact with the first team."

The 51-year-old Arias played for Recreativo Huelva, Sporting Gijon and Alaves, among other clubs, before retiring in 2002 to work in Recreativo's youth sector.

After a brief spell at Las Palmas, Arias linked up with Sevilla.

During his time at the club, Sevilla have won three straight Europa League titles.

"Sevilla have recognised Arias' efficient work accomplished during his four seasons at the club in which his performance has been excellent," the statement added.

Sevilla defender Sergio Escudero has applauded the club's decision to name Arias as Monchi's successor.

Escudero told Cadena Ser radio: "Oscar Arias knows the club perfectly and we are very happy with his appointment.

"He is going to do as a good a job as Monchi did. He is someone who is very close to the players.

"We have to have confidence in him and give him all of our support."

Sevilla won nine trophies, including five Europa League titles, after Monchi became sporting director in 2000, when the club were in the Segunda Division.

Among Arias's first tasks will be to deal with the position of coach.

Current boss Jorge Sampaoli, under contract with Sevilla until June 2018, has been offered the vacant Argentina coaching position.

Sevilla appointed Sampaoli last summer and offered him a one-year contract extension earlier this year but the Argentina coach has not accepted it yet.

With five games remaining, the Andalusian club are fourth in La Liga, three points adrift of third-place Atletico Madrid, who hold the last direct Champions League qualifying spot.

Sevilla, 2-0 winners over Granada last week, host Celta Vigo on Thursday.
