Sevilla have confirmed that their coach Jorge Sampaoli was handed a two-match touchline ban from UEFA after being sent to the stands by referee Mark Clattenburg for dissent during his team's 3-1 home defeat to Juventus on Nov. 22 in the Champion League.
The Argentinian was not on the sideline of his team's goalless draw at Lyon on Wednesday, a result that allowed Sevilla to progress to the round of 16 Group H runners-up, behind Juventus.
The 56-year-old will have to watch his team's round of 16 first leg game from the stands as well.
The club has said in a statement: "Jorge Sampaoli was banned for two games following his sending-off during the game against Juventus at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan (stadium). In particular, the ban states that a one-game ban corresponds to his sending-off and the second for getting in touch with the (Sevilla) bench."
Sampaoli, in his first experience coaching in Europe, accepted that his sending-off against Juventus was justified after he complained about several refereeing decisions, including the yellow cards shown to Sevilla playmaker Franco Vazquez that forced him to leave the game.
He told Marca: "My sending-off was correct because I complained and protested without justification.
"It's not up to me to analyse the referee's work, and that includes Vazquez's sending-off."
Sevilla, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Barcelona are the four La Liga sides to have reached the knockout round of Europe's elite club competition.
The draw for the next phase of the competition will be on Monday in Nyon. The Champions League resumes in February.
Sevilla, seventh in La Liga, play at Celta Vigo this weekend.
