Sevilla's Coke hopes Sampaoli can surpass Unai Emery's achievements

Sevilla midfielder Coke is hoping that new coach Jorge Sampaoli can do better than outgoing manager Unai Emery, who is linked with Paris Saint-Germain.

Emery guided Sevilla to three consecutive Europa League titles before tendering his resignation amid rumours that he is headed to PSG to replace Laurent Blanc.

Sevilla have moved quickly and have appointed Argentine coach Sampaoli who won the 2015 Copa America with the Chile national team.

Coke, 29, who has been with the club since 2011 praised Emery's role in shaping his career, and attributed the club's success in recent years to his former manager.

"He is the coach who has given me more continuity and backed me in difficult times," Coke told Marca.

"He has been a very important figure on a personal level. He gave us a competitive gene and changed how we played many times until we found the key.

"That blessed key helped us win three European titles."

While the Sevilla captain is sad to see Emery leaving the club, he immediately backed Sampaoli to exceed the latter's achievements.

"[Emery] is obviously a major loss, but I think we got a coach, Sampaoli in this case, who is very prepared," he said.

"Emery is a coach who has led us to achieve many titles and finals. Hopefully, Sampaoli can do it as well or better than him."

Sevilla have already added Getafe playmaker Pablo Sarabia and Hannover's Japanese midfielder Hiroshi Kiyotake to their roster for the upcoming season. Club legend and former Arsenal winger Jose Antonio Reyes has left the club.
