Garth Lagerwey swaps Real Salt Lake for Seattle Sounders

SEATTLE -- The Seattle Sounders have hired Garth Lagerwey as their new general manager, with current GM Adrian Hanauer moving to focus on the business operations of the franchise.

Seattle announced the long-expected move Tuesday. Lagerwey had spent the last seven-plus seasons as the general manager of Real Salt Lake, helping turn that franchise into a MLS Cup winner. Lagerwey will oversee all soccer operations for the Sounders.

Hanauer had said that if the best general manager was ever available, he would attempt to hire him. Hanauer believes Lagerwey is that option and the move will allow him to focus more on "strategy surrounding the long-term future of our club."

Lagerwey spent five seasons as a goalkeeper in the MLS from 1996-2000, playing for Kansas City, Dallas and Miami. He was hired by Real Salt Lake in 2007.
