Celtic legend Billy McNeill, first Briton to lift European Cup, dies aged 79

Billy McNeill served Celtic with distinction as both player and manager.

Billy McNeill, who as Celtic captain became the first British player to lift the European Cup, has died at the age of 79.

McNeill, who had suffered from dementia, captained Celtic's "Lisbon Lions" team to victory over Inter Milan in the 1967 final in Portugal and was a Scotland international.

His glittering career with Celtic saw him win a host of trophies, including nine consecutive Scottish league titles and seven Scottish Cups.

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has been handed a one-match touchline ban after accepting a charge of misconduct following Sunday's 2-1 defeat in the Scottish Premiership by Glasgow rivals Celtic.

The Scottish FA said the former England captain had taken a fixed offer.

United States forward Tim Weah said it was an "amazing feeling" to celebrate a goal in his first start for two months in Celtic's 2-0 win at St. Mirren in the Scottish Premier League on Wednesday.
