Hearts marked their inaugural game in the Petrofac Training Challenge Cup with a routine 3-1 win over League Two side Annan.
The Jambos, readying for a Championship campaign following last season's relegation, were out of sight by half-time with goals from Billy King, Osman Sow and Callum Paterson.
Hearts continued to dominate in the second half - in Robbie Neilson's first game as boss - but the only further goal came from the visitors in stoppage time as Scott Davidson cut in from the left and let fly into the bottom corner.
King opened the scoring in the eighth minute, wriggling his way past two challenges before firing high into the roof of the net.
Sow, on his debut, added a second 11 minutes later, collecting Dale Carrick's flick and slotting beyond Alex Mitchell.
Patterson made it three shortly before the break by heading in from Billy King's corner.
