San Jose Earthquakes sign Innocent Emeghara as designated player

The San Jose Earthquakes signed Swiss forward Innocent Emeghara to a designated player contract on Saturday.

Emeghara, 25, has played in Switzerland, France and Italy but most recently played for Qarabag in Azerbaijan, where he scored five goals in eight games.

He was on trial with Bundesliga club Hamburg earlier this month but decided on a move to MLS.

"We are excited to sign a player of his quality," Earthquakes general manager John Doyle said in a statement. "He is a player in the prime of his career who has played at the highest levels and we are happy to bring him here on a long-term deal. I would like to thank ownership and Dave Kaval for their commitment to signing a third Designated Player."

A native of Nigeria, Emeghara has earned nine caps with Switzerland.

The 5-foot-7 Emeghara will be the Earthquakes' third designated player, joining U.S. forward Chris Wondolowski and Argentinean midfielder Matias Perez Garcia.

"It is always good to sign a forward who has the potential to run away from the defense, but who is also clever enough to join in the play," said Earthquakes coach Dominic Kinnear. "He is good signing for the league and our team. He will be a threat to score every time he steps on the field."
