Football losing spectators like cinema - Sampdoria president Massimo Ferrero

Sampdoria president Massimo Ferrero has likened football to cinema, saying attracting as many spectators as possible is fundamental in both fields.

Ferrero, a film producer, has compared both of his main pursuits and says falling attendances is the major issue in both worlds.

While revenue from creating movies comes almost exclusively from the box office, football does have greater sources of revenue, such as television income and merchandising, but Ferrero nevertheless said clubs need to do more to attract people through the gates.

His club sold just under 17,000 season tickets in the summer and while that may be an increase of 10 percent on the previous year, it is still too low for Ferrero's liking.

"We've got to be careful because we are losing spectators and we need to bring the people back to the stadium again, otherwise we risk going in the same direction as cinema," Ferrero told RAI television. "We cannot focus solely on television."

Lazio sold fewer season tickets -- just 4,000 -- than any other club this summer, with a drop of almost 72 percent on 2015-16 as their fans continue to boycott games out of protest both at their president Claudio Lotito and new security measures at the Stadio Olimpico.

The separation of the Curva Nord for Lazio fans and Curva Sud for Roma fans also saw the Giallorossi's season ticket sales slump 25 percent to 18,100.

"My heart bleeds when I see the Stadio Olimpico so empty," Ferrero, a Roma fan, said. "We need to abolish the Melandri law [on television rights], which is now antiquated, and invest in our stadiums."

Meanwhile, Sampdoria forward Antonio Cassano has been training individually since the start of the season and he is not under consideration for team selection, but Ferrero said it was a wise move to leave the 34-year-old out.

"It was a decision based on technical matters," he said. "We have a coach who is on the same wavelength as me. Cassano has natural talent and he's a champion, but we want to bring young players through. My idea is to have a Samp side full of Italians in their 20s. We have a coach who plays young players, who helps them grow and can earn us a bit of profit."
