Sacramento Republic replace coach Paul Buckle with Simon Elliott

Paul Buckle
Paul Buckle is out as the coach of the Sacramento Republic.

The Sacramento Republic replaced coach Paul Buckle with former New Zealand midfielder Simon Elliott on Thursday, the USL club announced.

Buckle was hired in July 2015 to replace Preki Radosavljevic and led the team to 31 wins, 19 losses and 21 ties. The Republic reached the playoffs in all three seasons and won the Western Conference in 2016.

The team made the announcement on Thursday, saying Buckle's departure was by mutual agreement.

The move comes one day after the Republic hired Todd Dunivant as general manager, with the former LA Galaxy player taking over some of Buckle's technical director duties.

Buckle is the husband of NBC's Premier League host Rebecca Lowe, and when he was hired he and Lowe moved to California from Westport, Connecticut. Lowe has commuted since then for weekend broadcasts at NBC's studios in Stamford, Connecticut.

Buckle is a former midfielder for several English clubs and has pro coaching licenses from UEFA and the U.S. Soccer Federation.

Elliott, who played for Fulham and several MLS teams, had been a youth coach with the Republic since 2015.

Sacramento is one of three cities along with Cincinnati and Detroit named as a finalist for an MLS expansion team that is expected to be announced in the next month.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.
