Rwanda receive Antoine Hey resignation request amidst Syria speculation

The Rwanda Football Federation have confirmed that coach Antoine Hey has handed in a resignation request amidst speculation linking him with the Syria national team.

The German head coach confirmed to KweséESPN earlier in the week that he had received a contract offer, but insisted that his future would only be decided after the conclusion of Rwanda's African Nations Championship campaign.

The Amavubi were eliminated from the CHAN in the group stage after being defeated 1-0 by Libya in stoppage time of their final match, having taken four points from earlier clashes with Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea.

"FERWAFA has received a proposal from coach Antoine Hey seeking to terminate his contract," began a statement on the federation's official Twitter handle. "FERWAFA & MINISPOC will meet in the upcoming days to review his request.

"However, Coach Antoine Hey is duly urged to respect contract termination clauses binding both parties."

According to ACL Sports, Hey and federation president Vincent Nwamzita held a meeting at the team's Royal Tulip Hotel base in Tanger in which the two parties reached a mutual agreement to part ways, although these rumours are unconfirmed by FERWAFA.

"I have received a request if I'm available and I've received a contract proposal, but I've told them that during this tournament now I cannot speak to anybody and think about anything," Hey told KweséESPN after the Amavubi's 1-0 victory over Equatorial Guinea.

"My concentration is on my team and this tournament and what comes after, we will talk about when the tournament is over."
