CSKA Moscow face another stadium sanction over racist chanting

MOSCOW -- Russian Premier League club CSKA Moscow has been punished with a partial stadium closure over an incident in which their fans abused opposition supporters with racist chants.

CSKA fans chanted about people from Russia's Caucasus region, which is home to ethnic minority groups, throughout their 1-0 win over Anzhi Makhachkala on Saturday. The abuse reportedly included death threats.

The Russian Football Union ruled on Wednesday that CSKA must close six specified areas of their stadium when they host Rostov on Aug. 22. Only women and children under the age of 12 can be admitted to those sections.

It is the latest in a line of controversies involving racism for CSKA, who had to play two of their Champions League group stage home games last season behind closed doors after UEFA punished them for a string of racist and violent incidents.

They were originally handed a three-game stadium ban, which was reduced to two on appeal with the third match suspended for a period of five years. However, as this incident happened in a league game the suspended ban will not be activated.
