UEFA may create league in Crimea - Russia sports minister

Russia sports minister Vitaly Mutko says UEFA may set up its own directly administered football league in the disputed region of Crimea.

After Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine last year, its existing Ukrainian Premier League clubs were shut down and new teams created to play in the Russian leagues.

After the Ukrainian Football Federation protested, UEFA banned Crimean clubs from playing in the Russian league system, and said it would administer the peninsula as a "special zone," without providing further details.

Mutko, who met UEFA president Michel Platini in Moscow on Tuesday, told Russia's Tass news agency on Friday that "probably a Crimean football league will be created" soon, and it would answer directly to UEFA.

UEFA will "provide the necessary resources," he added.
