Leonid Slutsky steps down as Russia head coach

Leonid Slutsky has stepped down from his position as the head coach of Russia, the Russian Football Union (RFU) said on Thursday.

Slutsky, who is also the CSKA Moscow manager, announced he would not extend his Russia contract after were knocked out of the Euro 2016 last week, finishing bottom of Group B with one point from three games.

"The RFU would like to thank Leonid Slutsky, who helped Russia to qualify for Euro 2016, for his professionalism and we wish him all the success in his coaching career," the RFU said in a statement on their official website.

"Information regarding the new coaching staff of the Russian team will be published on the RFU's official website as soon as there is any information," the statement added.

Russia's next scheduled fixture is at home to Belgium on Oct. 10.
