Rotherham sack manager Alan Stubbs after nine-game winless run

Rotherham United have sacked manager Alan Stubbs after a ninth defeat in 13 league games left them six points adrift of safety in the Championship.

Stubbs, who took over at the New York Stadium in June, led Hibernian to a first Scottish Cup win in 114 years last season but was unable to transfer that success to the Millers.

In a statement on their official website, Rotherham confirmed assistant manager John Doolan and first team coach Andy Holden had also departed.

"Following a board meeting this morning it was felt that a change of first team management was needed to give the club the best possible opportunity to preserve our Championship status," a statement said.

"The club would like to place on record our thanks to Alan, John and Andy for their effort and professionalism, and we wish them well for the future.

"The board have now started the process of appointing a new first team manager."

Rotherham host Reading on Saturday hoping to end a run of nine games without a win.
