Real Salt Lake signs coach Mike Petke to long-term extension

Real Salt Lake has signed coach Mike Petke to a long-term contract extension despite missing out on the MLS playoffs, the club announced on Thursday

The length of the deal was not confirmed, though ESPN's Julie Stewart-Binks reported this week it would be for three years.

Petke took over RSL as an interim coach after the club fired Jeff Cassar five games into the season. He led the team to a record of 13 wins, four draws and 12 defeats and finished only one point outside of the Western Conference playoff spots.

"Loyalty is huge for me. I am ecstatic about [owner Dell Loy] Hansen coming to me and offering me this contract," Petke said in a club statement. "I'm ecstatic at the prospect of being here at least three more years.

"And I'm excited and ecstatic about what I think we can accomplish together -- Mr. Hansen, [RSL general manager] Craig Waibel, myself, the players... the whole organization. I'm on cloud nine because I have an owner who values me, likes what I'm doing and wants to reward me for that."

Petke previously coached the New York Red Bulls from 2013-14 but was fired ahead of the 2015 season.
