Real Salt Lake signs MLS veteran Chad Barrett as free agent

Real Salt Lake has signed veteran MLS striker Chad Barrett, the Western Conference club announced on Monday.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Barrett was a free agent after spending the 2016 season with San Jose Earthquakes, where he scored twice in 20 league appearances.

Real becomes the San Diego, California-native's seventh club in 12 MLS seasons. The 31-year-old previously played for the Chicago Fire, Toronto FC, LA Galaxy, New England Revolution and Seattle Sounders, and also had a brief spell with Norwegian side Valerenga, where he spent part of 2012 on loan from LA.

All told, the UCLA product has 57 goals in 275 regular season games. He's expected to back up target forward Yura Movsisyan in Salt Lake.

"Chad is a hard-working competitor with a nose for the goal," RSL general manager Craig Waibel said in a statement. "He's proven throughout his career that he can be an impact player either as a starter or off the bench, and we're happy to add him to the locker room."
