Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo 'happy and proud' after recent achievements

Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo has spoken of his "pride" in recent individual achievements, including a fifth career Ballon d'Or trophy and becoming the leading scorer in Club World Cup history.

Earlier this month, Ronaldo equalled Barcelona's Lionel Messi by winning it for a fifth time, having recently also picked up the FIFA The Best prize for 2017 for a second consecutive year.

On Wednesday in Abu Dhabi, the Portugal captain scored his sixth goal in six games in the Club World Cup with the equaliser in the 2-1 win over Al-Jazira, moving ahead of Messi, Barca's Luis Suarez and ex-Monterrey forward Cesar Delgado, who have all found the net five times in the competition.

Speaking to RMTV from Abu Dhabi, the 32-year-old former Manchester United man said: "I am very happy and proud, first of all for my football career, principally at Real Madrid.

"Winning my fifth Ballon d'Or and becoming the top Club World Cup scorer for me is a motivation to keep working happily and with sacrifice."

Ronaldo's long-term future remains a subject of debate, with the widespread speculation that he wanted to leave during the summer not being publicly explained, but he suggested he is keen to remain at the Bernabeu.

"I want to thank also my teammates, because without them it would be impossible to win," he said. "But the truth is that I am very happy. I will keep battling and making my fans happy, the people follow Cristiano. I am very happy."

Meanwhile, Argentina legend Diego Maradona has questioned Ronaldo's own claim at the Ballon d'Or ceremony to be the greatest player ever.

Speaking to AS from the United Arab Emirates, where he is now based as manager of second-division side Fujairah, the Argentina legend was asked if he agreed.

"Don't screw with me," he replied. "For me, for the little I saw, [Alfredo] Di Stefano, [Johan] Cruyff ... and then Messi. And Cristiano too."

Asked what he liked about Ronaldo's game, Maradona said: "His finishing. Another thing I recognise is that when his team needs him, Cristiano Ronaldo is there. He has that. And look, after Cruyff there have not been many players with this quality."

Maradona said Ronaldo and Messi dominating the Ballon d'Or award through the last decade had been "boring," while tipping Paris Saint Germain's Kylian Mbappe as the next big star and saying he had advised Madrid president Florentino Perez to sign the France teenager to replace Gareth Bale in their squad.

"It is very difficult to give the Ballon d'Or to one player," he said. "Because just giving it to Cristiano and Messi is boring. For me the revelation is Mbappe. I think he will pass out many of them. I told Florentino to sign Mbappe, when we saw each other at FIFA. He told me 'You know I have Cristiano, and this other one' ... they should sell Bale, give him away..."

During Maradona's heyday in the 1980s, only European players were eligible for the Ballon d'Or, and he said he "would have more than Cristiano and Messi" if the rules had been different at that time.
