Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos faces spell out with broken nose

Real Madrid have confirmed that club captain Sergio Ramos suffered a broken nose during Saturday's 0-0 draw in the Liga derby at Atletico Madrid.

Ramos sustained the injury during a first-half clash with Atletico defender Lucas Hernandez.

The defender had his nose plugged by club medical staff and played on until half-time, when he was replaced by Nacho Fernandez.

A club statement on Sunday read: "He [Ramos] has been diagnosed with a fractured nose. His recovery will continue to be assessed."

Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane said after the match, the first Madrid derbi at Atletico's new Wanda Metropolitano stadium, that he did not know how many games the defender could miss.

"I did not see anything and will not comment," he said. "The referee did his job, that's it. It is a fracture, for Sergio. I believe it's broken. I don't know how long he'll be out for."

Madrid, 10 points behind Liga leaders Barcelona, travel to Apoel Nicosia for Tuesday's Champions League clash.

They also face Borussia Dortmund in Europe and Malaga, Athletic Bilbao and Sevilla in the league before next month's FIFA Club World Cup in the United Arab Emirates.
