Theo Hernandez to follow 'role model' Marcelo's lead at Real Madrid

New Real Madrid signing Theo Hernandez wants to learn from Brazil international left-back Marcelo, who the 19-year-old called a "role model" at his Los Blancos unveiling on Monday.

Hernandez left city rivals Atletico Madrid to sign a six-year contract at the Bernabeu for a reported fee of €24 million last week.

And the left-back promised to follow Marcelo's lead in hopes of someday rising to the same level.

"He's the best wing-back in the world and what I'm going to do is work hard, follow his lead and try to get some minutes," Hernandez told reporters.

"All of the players will act as role models because they've all got the experience. What I'm going to do is follow [Marcelo's] lead and try to improve day by day alongside him.

"He's my role model as I look to become the best wing-back in the world in the future."

Hernandez opened eyes last season with a breakout campaign for Alaves, where he spent the year on loan.

Real president Florentino Perez suggested the club were forced to fight off stiff competition for the former Atleti youth product's signature.

He told Hernandez at the unveiling: "You wanted to come here and defend this badge despite other big European clubs wanting to sign you.

"Your commitment and conviction is something that won't be forgotten by everyone at Real Madrid.

"You were one of the breakthrough stars of last season's La Liga campaign and you've proved that you've got enough potential, quality, ambition, strength and determination to play for Real Madrid. You did everything in your power to be here and pull this shirt on.

"We're certain that you'll go on to lift many pieces of silverware during your time here. Today you're here where you wanted to be and a marvellous experience as a Real Madrid player awaits you."
