Guti has sights set on Real Madrid manager's job 'far' in the future

Former Real Madrid midfielder and current Blancos under-18 coach Guti says he hopes to take over the senior side at the Bernabeu one day, while underlining that he is happy for Zinedine Zidane to continue his successful spell in charge.

Jose Maria Gutierrez Hernandez scored 77 goals in 542 games between 1995 and 2010, winning five La Liga titles and three Champions League trophies, with his carefree attitude impressing the club's fans but never quite convincing his coaches.

After a short spell at Besiktas, and some local media work in Spain, the Madrid native took charge of the under-18 side at the Bernabeu last summer, and Sunday's 4-1 extra-time Copa del Rey win over Atletico Madrid saw his Juvenil side complete a historic domestic Treble.

Speaking to Onda Cero radio, the 40-year-old said it would be "stupid" not to admit he would like to follow his former teammate Zidane as first team coach at some point in the future.

"I still have a lot to learn as even after being a player, it is much more difficult to be a coach," Guti said. "All Madridistas hope Zidane stays a long time yet, he is a mirror for me.

"The objective for everyone is the first team. We aspire to the top and it would be stupid on my part not to say that to be able to coach the Real Madrid first team is a personal objective. But it is very far away and you must go step by step.

"Zidane is doing a great job, and what I want is to learn. The future is very far away."

Guti is expected to remain in charge of the under-18s next season, with another former teammate, Santiago Solari, remaining as coach of the club's Castilla B-side for 2017-18, despite a failure to gain promotion from the third tier last term.
