Real Madrid's Marco Asensio: I didn't come here to replace Isco, James

Spanish midfielder Marco Asensio has achieved his aim of not only gaining a spot on Real Madrid's squad but also earning a starting place.

The 20-year-old playmaker excelled in the preseason and moved above teammates James Rodriguez and Isco in the pecking order.

Rodriguez and Isco have been linked this summer with other clubs.

"I didn't come here to take the places of Isco and James," Asensio told Spanish radio station Cadena Ser. "I'm here to help. I aspire to be a starter but I know there are many players that are important and have been here a long time.

"If the coach decides to select me ahead of other players it's his decision."

Asensio shone while on loan at Espanyol last season, scoring four goals and setting up 10 more in 33 league starts for the Catalan outfit.

The Palma de Mallorca-born player returned to Real this summer and has already become a fan favourite.

Asensio scored a wonder goal in Real's 3-2 triumph over Sevilla in the UEFA Super Cup -- his first official game for Los Blancos.

He then hit the back of the net in a 3-0 triumph at Real Sociedad on the opening weekend of La Liga. Asensio, a player some expected to leave for a new club this summer, started for the third consecutive game on Saturday in a 1-0 triumph over Celta Vigo.

"I made it clear before preseason that I wanted to remain," he said. 'However, had I not had any playing time, I would have left.

"After preseason, [coach Zinedine] Zidane told me he wanted me to stay."

Asensio does not just want to settle for being a member of a squad at one of the biggest clubs in the world.

"I want to make history at Real Madrid," he said. "I want to make my mark, and I want to win every possible title."

Asensio says he is learning a lot from Real's star-studded attacking duo of Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale.

"I admire Cristiano's ambition and his goal-scoring touch," Asensio said. "Bale has a fantastic left foot, for the time being better than mine.

"He is a great player and I see him winning the Ballon d'Or."

Asensio is also on the way up with the national team. He made his Spain debut in a friendly against Bosnia and Herzegovina in May and has been included in Julen Lopetegui's 24-man list for the games against Belgium and Lichtenstein.

"I'm very happy," Asensio said. "I get to wear the best jerseys, that of Real and Spain."
