Bruce Springsteen Bernabeu gig set to end Copa del Rey final venue row

Rock star Bruce Springsteen is to perform at the Bernabeu on May 21, with the news appearing to end a debate over whether Real Madrid should offer the stadium for the Copa del Rey final between Barcelona and Sevilla.

The final will be played on May 21 -- or May 22 should Sevilla reach the Europa League final -- but its venue has yet to be confirmed.

La Liga president Javier Tebas had told Cope radio station that he would like it to take place at the Bernabeu, but Barca figures including former president Joan Gaspart suggested Madrid feared the prospect of their bitter rivals celebrating a trophy at the stadium.

Reports in Spain say the date for the Springsteen concert has ruled out the possibility of a Bernabeu final.

Atletico Madrid's Estadio Vicente Calderon now looks the most likely option, with Valencia's Mestalla also a possibility.

New Real Madrid institutional director Roberto Carlos entered the debate on Monday's El Larguero radio show, pointing out that Madrid had hoped to play the 2004 Copa final at the Camp Nou, but that had not been allowed to happen.

"I would not give the Bernabeu to play the Copa final," he said. "We have been in the same situation. Spain has modern, new stadiums -- why the Bernabeu? I do not want to cause any controversy, but we had a very sad situation in 2004."
