Karim Benzema's lawyer 'outraged' by alleged leaked call in blackmail case

Karim Benzema's lawyer says he will make an official complaint over the partial leaking of recorded telephone conversations allegedly relating to the Real Madrid striker's involvement in the Mathieu Valbuena blackmail case.

Benzema, 27, was charged last week with conspiracy to blackmail as part of a wider investigation into an alleged attempt to extort money from his France team mate Valbuena, 31, using a sex tape.

Investigators suspect Benzema, who has denied any wrongdoing, was approached by a childhood friend to act as an intermediary between the blackmailers and Valbuena.

On Tuesday, French radio station Europe 1 released selected transcriptions of what it said was a 20-minute phone conversation between Benzema and his childhood friend, which allegedly took place on Oct. 6.

According to Europe 1, Benzema recounted a discussion he had had with Valbuena at the French national team's headquarters, during which he allegedly tried to convince the Lyon midfielder that he had seen the video at the centre of the case.

Last week, Benzema's lawyer Sylvain Cormier denied reports that Benzema had confessed to suggesting that Valbuena should pay off the blackmailers.

On Tuesday, Cormier hit out at the release of selected evidence relating to the case, which he says is designed to damage his client.

"I'm going to be very clear," he told Europe 1. "I'm outraged by this behaviour -- to broadcast, not a conversation in full, but extracts of it.

"When I discovered this file, I discovered that there are some passages that are obviously passages that can be misinterpreted."

Cormier repeated his assertion from last week that Benzema had advised Valbuena to warn his family and let the video be released without paying anyone to stop it.

"What is certain is that this was done on purpose," Cormier said.

"We're blowing the whistle for the end of the game and we're announcing that we're lodging a complaint for a violation of the confidentiality of investigations.

"You can't broadcast -- it's repressed by the law, incidentally -- selected passages and deliberately the most unpleasant ones."

Benzema said on Monday he was "very calm" in the wake of the charges, while Valbuena -- who has not yet discussed his conversation with Benzema with the authorities -- is set to give testimony before an investigating judge in the coming days.
