Real Madrid legend Raul Gonzalez open to coaching role in future

Retiring New York Cosmos forward Raul Gonzalez has said he would like to return to former club Real Madrid at some point, but that day remains far away in the future.

Raul scored 323 goals in 741 games in 16 seasons as a Madrid player, a record only recently beaten by Cristiano Ronaldo.

The former striker has been identified by some pundits in Spain as a potential coach who could have a similar impact to his former international teammate Pep Guardiola at Barcelona.

The Madrid-native left the Bernabeu in 2010 for Schalke amid an apparent breakdown in his relationship with club president Florentino Perez, but more recent reports have claimed their relationship is now better.

At a news conference the 38-year-old said that when the time is right he would return "home," but would not say when that might be.

"Real Madrid is my home and some day the moment will come to return," Raul said. "But it will not be in the near future, although there is continuous contact."

The former Spain international said he had not yet taken his coaching badges, and his immediate priority was to spend some quality time with his family after over 20 years playing as a professional.

"I do not feel a coach, nor am I thinking now about being one in the next few years," he said. "At the moment I want to be a father and a person.

"To be a coach you need to go through a training process I have not yet started, but I would like to coach a winning team. [For now] I will stay living in New York with my family, open to a new life, open to many possibilities."
