Real Madrid's Keylor Navas will stay in Spain during international break

Costa Rica goalkeeper Keylor Navas has been given permission by his country's federation to remain in Spain during the international break to settle his situation with club Real Madrid.

The 28-year-old will miss a pair of September friendlies against Brazil and Uruguay.

Navas was set to ship off for Manchester United as part of a transfer deal that would have brought David De Gea to the Bernabeu. However, that prospective deal was scuppered at the last moment when paperwork to complete the move was not filed in time.

Fedefutbol posted a statement on their website following an up and down 72 hours for Navas in which he started for los Blancos in a 5-0 win against Real Betis, learned he'd be moving to Old Trafford and then found out he would be remaining at Real Madrid.

The statement read: "Navas will not join up with Costa Rica," Fedefutbol's official Twitter account stated on Tuesday. "The federation and head coach Oscar Ramirez will give him space to tend to his situation with Real Madrid."

Freddy Navas, Keylor's father, told Pasion Deportiva that he felt the Spanish press had vilified his son during the drawn-out saga to bring De Gea to Real Madrid.

"The Spanish media want to have a Spanish goalkeeper at Real Madrid, they can't accept a Central American player there. They know he's the best, but they can't accept it.

"Seeing him be cheered by the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday sent shivers down my spine and brought tears to my eyes. He has one of the most difficult tasks at one of the biggest clubs in the world. We are proud of him.

"Keylor tells me he has the support of the dressing room. Marcelo, Cristiano Ronaldo, James Rodriguez ... They all love him because he's quiet and humble."

Navas is beginning his second season at Real Madrid after his coming-out party at the 2014 World Cup led to a transfer from Levante to Real that summer.

Navas battled with Iker Casillas for first-team minutes in goal and was the presumed No. 1 once the long-time Real player moved to Porto earlier this summer.
