Real Madrid's Karim Benzema injury confirmed amid Arsenal transfer talk

Karim Benzema has suffered a thigh injury, casting doubt over his availability for Real Madrid for the start of the season.

Benzema, 27, has been left out, along with Cristiano Ronaldo, of Real's squad for the Audi Cup tournament in Germany with concerns over the attacking duo's fitness.

The France international has undergone tests which confirmed a thigh problem, although it has not yet be announced for how long he will be sidelined.

Benzema has been linked with a summer transfer to Arsenal but Arsene Wenger has dismissed fresh reports Arsenal are lining up a move.

The former Lyon forward scored 15 La Liga goals last season and also recorded 10 assists in 29 appearances.

Real's domestic campaign starts at Sporting Gijon on Aug. 23, meaning Benzema has less than three weeks to recover if he is to feature in the curtain-raiser.

When asked if the former Lyon player could leave La Liga before the transfer deadline, head coach Rafael Benitez said: "My answer is that I think Benzema is going to stay with us."

Speaking ahead of Tuesday's Audi Cup clash against Tottenham in Munich, he added: "I'm very happy with him. There's no reason to think that he's going to go."
