Marcelo backed over Ronaldo to replace Casillas as Real captain - poll

Marcelo would be a popular choice to take over the captaincy of Real Madrid should both Sergio Ramos and Iker Casillas leave the club this summer, according to a poll by Marca.

Real skipper Casillas and vice-captain Ramos have two years left on their contracts with the Madrid outfit and have been the subject of transfer speculation in recent months.

According to a poll in Marca, in which 6,000 people voted on who should wear the captain's armband should Casillas and Ramos depart, Marcelo received 61.4 percent of the votes compared to 38.6 percent for Cristiano Ronaldo.

Marcelo, 27, moved to Real from Brazilian club Fluminense in January 2007, with Ronaldo joining from Manchester United 30 months later.

The Brazil international -- with 320 appearances for Real in his nine years at the club -- is the longest-serving member in the team, after Casillas and Ramos, and should be honoured with the captaincy if the club's tradition of seniority is to continue.

However, a section of the fans that voted consider that Ronaldo should be rewarded for his heroics at Real.

The Portuguese captain, voted world footballer of the year three times in his career, is the second highest scorer in the club's history with 314 goals. The 30-year-old forward is nine goals short of equalling Raul's record (323).

Ronaldo scored 61 goals in all competitions for Real in the 2014-15 campaign, his best numbers for the club since joining the Spanish giants six years ago.

The former Manchester United player finished the past campaign as the top scorer in La Liga for the third time in his career after netting 48 goals in 35 league games.

Real have had just one foreign player to captain the team in the club's 113-year history -- Mexican Jose Ramon Sauto skippered Real from 1942-1944.

Real coach Rafa Benitez will have the final say on who will captain the team next season.

Los Blancos have been linked with Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea and if the transfer is completed, long-time captain Casillas, is expected to leave. Ramos would replace Casillas as captain if he is to remain at the club.

However, the Spain defender has not received a contract extension and has reportedly asked the club to listen to offers amid interest from Manchester United.
