David De Gea arrival at Real Madrid would be welcomed by Iker Casillas

Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas says he would be delighted to stay and fight for a first-team spot, even if the club sign David De Gea from Manchester United this summer.

Real are interested in De Gea, 24, following his impressive season for United, with manager Louis van Gaal admitting the shot-stopper could leave the club.

De Gea's potential arrival may see long-serving Madrid club captain Casillas, 34, move on, especially due to his difficult relationship with many Blancos fans following a mixed last few seasons.

Asked if he saw himself on the Bernabeu bench next season if De Gea does arrive, the Madrid-born keeper told El Larguero that he would fight to keep his place -- as he is currently doing at international level with the Spain team.

"The truth is I want to end my career here," Casillas said. "If David comes, he is a great kid. We have spoken with the national team, we do not have a very close relationship, but when we are together it has always been great.

"He is a great kid, and he is already a reality as a goalkeeper of the present and with a future in front of him. If next year someone else comes, David or anyone, he will be well received. We will have to compete, as we are competing with the national team."

Casillas admitted that he had spoken recently with the club's director general Jose Angel Sanchez, did not deny he had been told Madrid planned to sign De Gea, but said he did not feel pressured into leaving despite having two years left on his current contract.

"With all the rumours around we spoke," he said. "We asked each other questions, as maybe it is good to know that the club think about all of this. And he said to stay here. Then there was nothing else to say.

"I do not have the feeling it was a push [out of the club]. I do not see myself outside this club next season. I have said many times I would like to finish my career here. I feel fine, I like challenges, although in recent years I have been criticised, I am stubborn and always want to take them on."

Competing for a starting spot with anyone was not a problem, Casillas said.

"I compete for my place," he said. "In my contract it does not have a clause saying Iker Casillas must be first choice every year. You have to fight and compete. The coach decides. The aim is to win games and trophies. I can say clearly that, as of today, Iker Casillas will be at Real Madrid next season."

Casillas has regularly been whistled by his own team's fans through recent seasons, with the breach dating back to a row with then coach Jose Mourinho three years back, and admitted the regular questioning and criticism of his performances had been hard to take.

"It has been tiresome to see myself every day in the media, people all giving their different opinions," he said. "But being at this club, and achieving so much on a personal and team level, you are in the spotlight for good or bad. Some days I have left angry, as things have not gone well, or the fans demanded more.

"But that is what Real Madrid is, you must be at that level. Every year they demand more, 16 years in first team, 25 years at the club. If you were always at 8/10, they will not let you drop to 7.5. I stick with those who applaud, those who whistle you must say we have something in common. We all want Madrid to win games and trophies."
