Real Madrid in front more than any other team in Europe's top leagues

Real Madrid have spent the highest percentage of game time in the lead across the top five European leagues so far this season, according to a study by the CIES Football Observatory.

Carlo Ancelotti's team, who lead arch rivals Barcelona by a point in La Liga with a game in hand, have been in front for 64.7 percent of their matches. Premier League leaders Chelsea rank second, having led for 56.3 percent of the time.

Bundesliga table toppers Bayern Munich, on 52.4 percent, and Juventus, with 52 percent, rank in third and fourth.

Lyon are the only team to top their division to not spend the most time in front in matches. They have led for 38.3 percent of games, which only ranks them third in Ligue 1 -- Marseille top that ranking on 41.5 percent.

Madrid are far in excess of the next best team in Spain, fifth-placed Valencia with 44.8 percent. Barca rank fifth in La Liga having led for 39.6 percent of the season.

Chelsea also hold a considerable advantage over Manchester City, with Jose Mourinho's 56.3 percent way out in front of Manuel Pellegrini's 38.8 per cent. Tottenham are the worst performing team of those who, preseason, were expected to challenge for European places, having led for 27.5 percent of matches.

In Germany, Dortmund would be bang in midtable based on the time they have spent in front (24.6 percent), but their inability to hold on to a lead means they sit in relegation trouble.

There's depressing reading for Sunderland fans, who have led for less time than any other team in the major leagues -- just 10.3 percent, which means they have been in front for only 204 minutes across 1,980 minutes of 22 games.

Serie A sides Cesena, 11.1 percent, and Parma, 11.2 percent, are the next worst followed by Granada on 11.7 percent and German outfit Paderborn on 12.4 percent.
