Real Madrid to play at Melbourne Cricket Ground in Champions Cup

MELBOURNE, Australia -- Real Madrid have been confirmed as one of three European teams to contest the International Champions Cup Australia tournament at the Melbourne Cricket Ground next July.

The 100,024-seat stadium will host matches on July 18, 21 and 24 when the International Champions Cup expands to including an Asia-Pacific tournament running in conjunction with the established U.S. competition.

Organisers of the Melbourne tournament, including the Victoria state government, announced Real Madrid's participation on Monday.

The 2014 edition was played across 13 cities in North America, with a U.S. record 109,318 fans attending the group game between Real Madrid and Manchester United at Michigan Stadium in August. Manchester United won that match and later beat Liverpool in the final.
