Gareth Bale: My aim is to become as good a player as Cristiano Ronaldo

Gareth Bale has told the BBC that he is aiming to become as good a player as his Real Madrid teammate Cristiano Ronaldo.

Bale, 25, who became the world's most expensive player when he moved to the Bernabeu two summers ago, scored as Real went into the international break on top of La Liga after a 5-1 win over Rayo Vallecano.

The Wales captain said he believed Ronaldo is the best player in the world and said he was aspiring to reach the same standards of performance.

"I'm improving all the time and trying to get to the level Cristiano is at," he explained.

"The amount of goals he scores, and what he does for the team, is incredible. Nobody is living up to that. At the moment, he's on another level to everyone else.

"Seeing him in training and in games gives me that kind of platform to aim for, and hopefully one day I can get there. If you don't want to be the world's best you probably shouldn't be playing football."
