Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira undergoes knee surgery in Germany

Real Madrid have confirmed that midfielder Sami Khedira has undergone a knee operation in Germany.

Khedira was in his home country recovering from a hamstring problem, which itself led to a public row between his club and the German Football Association (DFB) over when the injury occurred.

The 27-year-old was expected to return soon to the Spanish capital to continue his recovery, but instead had a procedure in Germany, as revealed in a club statement on Wednesday.

"Sami Khedira, who is currently out injured with a left hamstring problem, has undergone an arthroscopic revision on his left knee," the statement said. "The procedure went successfully and was conducted by Dr. Ulrich Boenisch at the Hessingpark Clinic in Augsburg with the supervision of Dr. Jesus Olmo. The player will continue to be treated by the Sanitas Real Madrid Medical Services in the next few days."

Khedira last played as a late substitute in Madrid's 4-2 loss at Real Sociedad on Aug. 31, and then travelled to Germany to take part in the World Cup holders' 4-2 friendly defeat to Argentina and 2-1 Euro 2016 qualifying victory over Scotland.

But upon joining up with his national side, Khedira was immediately ruled out of the games with his national team's doctors saying he had a muscle tear which would rule him out of action for some weeks.

Madrid's medical update on their player stated that the injury had occurred "during his time with the German national team." However, the DFB's technical director Oliver Bierhoff subsequently said Khedira had arrived injured to his national team's camp, and the issue had been missed by the Primera Liga club's medical team.

Last November, Khedira suffered a serious knee injury playing with Germany in a friendly, and underwent surgery overseen by Muller-Wohlfarth, with Madrid reportedly receiving compensation of around 2.5 million euros under FIFA's club protection programme. That operation was to his right knee, while the latest operation was to his other leg.

Khedira was expected to leave Madrid this summer -- with widespread speculation linking him with a move to either Bayern Munich and Arsenal -- but he decided to stay at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, and now has less than 12 months left on his current contract.
