Real's Daniel Carvajal doubtful for Atletico clash after Spain withdrawal

Real Madrid full-back Daniel Carvajal is a doubt for Saturday's La Liga derbi against Atletico Madrid after withdrawing from the Spain squad due to a hamstring injury.

Carvajal, 22, made his senior international debut in last week's 1-0 friendly defeat in France, and looks a serious contender to replace club colleague Alvaro Arbeloa as La Roja's next long-term first-choice right-back.

The graduate of Madrid's La Fabrica academy has already displaced Arbeloa at club level, but Carvajal's participation against Atletico at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu this weekend now looks seriously in doubt.

The official statement released by the Royal Spanish Football Federation did not specify how long the youngster would be on the sidelines, however.

"Real Madrid defender Daniel Carvajal is leaving the national team camp due to a hamstring injury in his left thigh," the statement read. "After a scan in Valencia this morning, Monday Sept. 8, under an agreement with Sanitas, the official medical partner of the Spanish national team, it was decided that Carvajal would leave the camp.

"The medical report and the scan results have been sent to the medical services of his club, which has at all times been informed about the player's injury."

Madrid have also lost Sami Khedira to injury in recent days, with confusion surrounding whether the Germany international picked up a thigh muscle tear while with club or country.
