Gus Poyet named Real Betis manager for next two seasons

Real Betis have announced that Gus Poyet will be their manager for the next two seasons, replacing Juan Merino.

The former Sunderland boss was most recently managing Greek side AEK Athens through the end of the 2016 season.

The Uruguay native made his managerial debut with Brighton and was appointed by Sunderland to replace Paolo Di Canio in October 2013. He is credited with saving the Black Cats from relegation while also guiding them to the final of the League Cup where they were beaten by Manchester City that season.

Real Betis will hold an official news conference on Wednesday.
