Former West Brom manager Steve Clarke is set to replace Nigel Adkins as Reading manager, sources have told ESPN FC.

The Championship Royals are searching for a new boss after Adkins was sacked on Monday.

If Clarke agrees terms, he could be in charge for this weekend's home clash with Watford.

Adkins' final game in charge was a humiliating 6-1 defeat at Birmingham, which left Reading in 16th place.

The Berkshire club have lost nine of their last 15 matches in all competitions, and it is understood that Clarke is their top choice to succeed Adkins.

The Scot has been out of work for almost a year after being sacked by West Brom, whom he guided to eighth place in the Premier League in 2012-13.

He has a wealth of coaching experience, having worked as assistant manager at Newcastle, Chelsea, West Ham and Liverpool before taking charge of the Baggies.
