RB Leipzig's Oliver Burke first Scot to score in Bundesliga since 1999

RB Leipzig forward Oliver Burke became the first Scottish player to score in the Bundesliga for almost 17 years when he netted in the 1-1 draw at Cologne on Sunday.

Burke, 19, made his first start for newly promoted RB Leipzig since joining from Championship side Nottingham Forest for a reported fee of around €15 million and becoming the most expensive-ever Scottish player.

The Scotland international, playing in the centre of the Leipzig attack, was on target after only five minutes when he converted a through ball from Marcel Sabitzer.

That made him the first Scottish player to score in Germany's top flight since Brian O'Neil did so for Wolfsburg in a defeat against Hertha Berlin in November 1999.

"It feels amazing -- words can't describe it," Burke told the official Leipzig website. "It's real dream come true for me. As soon as it hit the back of the next, I was so happy and just wanted to celebrate with my teammates."

Leipzig are undefeated in their first five Bundesliga matches, and if they do not lose against Augsburg will become the first newly promoted team ever to go undefeated in their first six.

Coach Ralph Hasenhuttl said he was delighted by Burke's goal, while club captain Dominik Kaiser said: "He showed that he's got a lot of quality."

Speaking before the game, Burke played down comparisons to Wales and Real Madrid star Gareth Bale.

He told Bild: "That's naturally a big compliment. But I am Oliver Burke and still far away from being compared to him. He's one of the best players in the world, and I am only 19. I still need to learn a lot."
