Joey Barton's Rangers contract terminated

Rangers have announced that midfielder Joey Barton's contract has been terminated.

Barton, 34, has not featured for Rangers since being banished from the club following a bust-up with manager Mark Warburton in the wake of September's humiliating 5-1 defeat to Celtic.

Rangers said in a statement: "Rangers and Joey Barton have agreed to terminate his contract with immediate effect. Neither Rangers nor Joey Barton will comment further."

Barton did, however, take to Twitter to thank the fans he played for just eight times.

Barton's representatives met with Gers officials on Wednesday in a bid to bring the eight-week stalemate to an end, with a severance deal eventually agreed.

The former Manchester City, Newcastle and Queens Park Rangers player was banished from the club's training base following a row with Warburton and teammate Andy Halliday, in which he criticised the team's approach to defending in the wake of their loss to Celtic.

His refusal to apologise and an unsanctioned live radio interview saw his initial seven-day exclusion extended by another three weeks.

Barton is also being investigated by the Scottish Football Association over allegations he broke strict betting rules.

The former Manchester City, Newcastle and QPR player joined Gers in the summer after leaving Burnley, signing a two-year contract worth £20,000-a-week.
