Andres Guardado of PSV Eindhoven named Eredivisie player of the year

Mexico international Andres Guardado has been named the Dutch first division's best player over the past season by sports newspaper AD Sportwereld.

Guardado helped PSV Eindhoven to the Eredivisie title in his first season at the club and is set to captain Mexico at July's Gold Cup.

"After winning the league title, this is proof of individual appreciation, I'm proud," Guardado said. "I'll come back next year to defend both achievements."

Guardado, 28, was given a 6.85 rating for his performances over the season, compared to second-placed Feyenoord midfielder Jordy Clasie, who was awarded a 6.74.

The former Atlas player and three-time World Cup veteran has been an unqualified success this season for PSV since moving on loan from Valencia last August and has already put pen to paper on a permanent three-year deal with the club.

"I think this was one of my most consistent seasons," Guardado said. "I'm at an age at which I don't get worked up if something goes badly or the team doesn't start well."

PSV fans have clearly taken to Guardado, dedicating chants to him and producing a mosaic before one game in March, urging him to stay at the club.

Mexico president Enrique Pena Nieto also praised Guardado in a tweet on Tuesday.
