Argentina referees vow to strike after referee attacked in fourth division

Sarmiento de Ayacucho v Sansinena took a violent turn in Argentina, when players and fans attacked officials.

Argentina's union of referees has threatened to go on strike to protest the brutal attack on an official by angry fans on Sunday.

Players and a section of fans of fourth-division Argentine side Sarmiento de Ayacucho attacked referee Claudio Elichiri during a semifinal promotion playoff against Sansinena on Sunday.

A group of supporters stormed the field after Elichiri did not award a foul for the home side. Sansinena scored immediately afterward to go 2-1 up in the second leg and 4-2 on aggregate.

Atlanta United completed the signing of Lanus midfielder Miguel Almiron on Monday.

The MLS expansion club will pay a transfer fee of around $8 million to the Argentina club, according to multiple league sources, after initial reports had pegged Almiron's fee as high as $13 million.

Almiron signed a Young Designated Player contract after acquiring the right of first refusal from the Seattle Sounders in exchange for general allocation money.

Juan Sebastian Veron is set to make a shock return to football with Estudiantes after retiring in 2014.

The former Manchester United and Argentina midfielder hung up his boots two years ago to become chairman of his boyhood club Estudiantes, having won 73 caps for his country and played for the likes of United, Inter Milan and Lazio.
