Bayern Munich's Renato Sanches left out of Portugal's Olympic squad

Renato Sanches has not been included in Portugal's 17-man squad for the upcoming Olympic games in Rio de Janeiro.

Sanches, who was on manager Rui Jorge's preliminary squad list for the tournament, helped Portugal win the European Championship after beating hosts France in extra time of Sunday's final.

Along with Sanches, five other pre-listed players from Portugal's Euro 2016-winning squad were not called to the team on Thursday, with Raphael Guerreiro, Andre Gomes, Joao Mario, William Carvalho and Rafa Silva also missing out. 

Of those heading to Rio, Porto's Sergio Oliveira, Salvador Agra of CD Nacional and Sporting's Andre Martins have been selected as the three overage players.

Meanwhile, seven of the players selected featured in Portugal's 2015 Euro Under-21 runners-up campaign, including Manchester United's Bruno Varela, Sporting's Ricardo Esgaio, Liverpool's Tiago Ilori, CD Nacional's Tobias Figueiredo, Porto's Sergio Oliveira, Carlos Mane of Sporting and Porto's Goncalo Paciencia. 

In all, 13 of the 17 players named are based at Portuguese clubs, while two play for Premier League sides and one each are from Spain and Italy.

An 18th player to the squad will be announced in the coming days.

Portugal will play their first match against Argentina at the Engenhao stadium in Rio on Aug. 4.

Defenders: Edgar Ié (Villarreal CF), Ricardo Esgaio (Sporting), Tiago Ilori (Liverpool FC), Tobias Figueiredo (CD Nacional)

Midfielders: Andre Martins (Sporting), Bruno Fernandes (Udinese Calcio), Fabio Sturgeon (Belenenses), Francisco Ramos (GD Chaves), Sergio Oliveira (FC Porto), Tiago Silva (CD Feirense), Tomas Podstawski (FC Porto)

Forwards: Carlos Mane (Sporting), Goncalo Paciencia (FC Porto), Nuno Santos (Vitoria FC), Salvador Agra (CD Nacional).
