Cristiano Ronaldo 'did not ask for Tiago and Ricardo Carvalho apology'

The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) has denied claims that Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo told Tiago Mendes and Ricardo Carvalho to apologise for quitting the national team before being brought back into the squad.

In a statement responding to the claims, made in popular Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manha, the FPF said: "It is not true that the captain has spoken to these or other colleagues to demand they ask for a pardon or any other acts of behaviour."

The newspaper had claimed that 29-year-old Ronaldo had asked Tiago, 33 and Ricardo Carvalho, 36, to acknowledge that they had made mistakes in departing from the squad over the last three years.

Carvalho, now at Monaco, left controversially in August 2011 when he walked out of a training camp, saying he felt disrespected by the coaching staff. Atletico Madrid midfielder Tiago retired from international football in January the same year.

Both this week expressed regret over what had happened, and both were included in Fernando Santos's squad for Saturday's friendly against France. They are also available for the Euro 2016 qualifier against Denmark on Oct. 14.
