Portland Timbers' Liam Ridgewell, Jake Gleeson charged with DUII in Oregon

Timbers captain Liam Ridgewell was arrested one day after the MLS regular season ended.

Portland Timbers players Liam Ridgewell and Jake Gleeson were arrested and charged with drunken driving offenses late Monday night.

The Clackamas County Sheriff's Office charged both players with driving under the influence of intoxicants (DUII), according to its website. The news was first reported by KATU in Portland.

Ridgewell, 32, and Gleeson, 26, both posted a $7,500 bond and have a Lake Oswego municipal court date set for Nov. 16.

A Lake Oswego police spokesman told The Oregonian that Gleeson was involved in a two-vehicle crash and was also charged with reckless driving and reckless endangerment.

Gleeson "apparently called a friend to come pick him up, and that was Ridgewell," Sgt. Tom Hamann said, and officers determined after field sobriety tests that both men were under the influence. Ridgewell was charged only with DUII.

In a must-win game for Portland to make the playoffs, Vancouver showed no mercy, drilling four goals past the reigning MLS champs.

Police said both players were also cited for declining a breath test.

In a team statement, the Timbers said: "The team is aware of the events that occurred last evening involving players Jake Gleeson and Liam Ridgewell and is in the process of gathering information on the matter.

"The team has been in close contact with the players, local law enforcement and the league office. The club will not have further comment until more information is available."

The arrests come one night after the Timbers were eliminated from qualifying for the MLS playoffs. Portland concluded the regular season on Sunday with a loss to Vancouver Whitecaps FC and finished seventh in the Western Conference.

Gleeson started as goalkeeper in the 4-1 loss, while Ridgewell had been suspended for the finale.

Ridgewell, a defender from England, joined the Timbers in 2014. He has spent the previous two offseasons with clubs in the English Championship.

Gleeson, who signed with the Timbers in 2010, has eight international appearances for New Zealand.
