Chelsea boss Sarri gets 1/10 after playing into Guardiola's hands in City thrashing

ESPN FC's Craig Burley takes issue with colleague Gab Marcotti's excuse-making for Maurizio Sarri's tactics in Chelsea's 6-0 defeat at Man City.

Manchester City handed Chelsea their heaviest defeat since 1991 as a first-half blitz won the game for the Premier League champions inside the first 25 minutes, with Sergio Aguero completing his hat trick in the second half and Raheem Sterling netting a late second to complete a 6-0 win.

Positives

At least Chelsea have the Carabao Cup final to look forward to...oh.

Negatives

This was a defeat to raise questions about the entire Maurizio Sarri project. Chelsea came to the Etihad Stadium, tried...

Chelsea's Cesar Azpilicueta signs contract extension to 2022

English Premier League: Ruben Loftus-Cheek (82') Chelsea 2-0 Fulham

Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta has signed a contract extension which will keep him at the club until 2022.

The Spain international moved to Stamford Bridge in 2012 and has captained the side on several occasions this season in the absence of permanent skipper Gary Cahill.

"I am really happy to extend my stay here at Chelsea," Azpilicueta said. "Since I came, I felt the joy and responsibility to play for this club, these fans, and every time I go on the pitch I try do my best.

Cesar Azpilicueta has agreed a new long-term extension to his Chelsea contract that commits him to the club until at least June 2022, sources have confirmed to ESPN FC.

A formal announcement of the deal -- which will reportedly see Azpilicueta's wages rise to around £150,000-a-week -- is expected in the coming days.

Azpilicueta, whose previous deal ran to the summer of 2020, follows Marcos Alonso and N'Golo Kante in committing his long-term future to Chelsea in recent weeks.

Premier League picker: One rival player taken to help each 'Big Six' club

As strong as the Premier League's "Big Six" are, they all have areas they need to improve. But what if each club was allowed to pick a player from a rival to fill their biggest weakness? Without taking transfer fees or personal considerations into account, here's who they might choose.

ARSENAL: Virgil van Dijk

Given that this Arsenal team is a work in progress under new manager Unai Emery, it's admirable how well they're doing. That said, their fans would be forgiven for closing their eyes...

Gary Cahill to remain Chelsea captain, Cesar Azpilicueta vice-captain - Maurizio Sarri

LONDON -- Gary Cahill will remain as Chelsea's captain despite uncertainty surrounding his future at Stamford Bridge, coach Maurizio Sarri has said.

Cahill, yet to start a Premier League match this season, said in September that he faced a "tough decision" over whether to leave in January if he does not play more regularly.

Cesar Azpilicueta captains Chelsea when Cahill is not playing and Sarri said that, after consulting his players, he would not change the hierarchy.

"As we have seen in the last...
