Sokratis out for a month to add to Arsenal injury crisis, Koscielny jaw being assessed

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's magnificent start as Manchester United's caretaker manager continued in the FA Cup as his side swept aside Arsenal, at The Emirates.
Stewart Robson examines what Arsenal have left to play for this season after their FA Cup exit, while Craig Burley says they need to think big picture.

Arsenal have said they will be without defender Sokratis for a month, while captain Laurent Koscielny is being reviewed on a daily basis after suffering a suspected broken jaw.

The Gunners face an injury crisis after the two injuries in Friday's home FA Cup fourth-round defeat to Manchester United left them with only one fit recognised central defender.

Sokratis was replaced after 21 minutes after appearing to twist his left ankle, while Koscielny took a blow to the face from Romelu Lukaku and had...

Sokratis Papastathopoulos 7/10, Danny Welbeck injured as Arsenal play out stalemate vs. Sporting

LONDON -- Arsenal were held to a 0-0 draw by Sporting Lisbon on Thursday, but that was enough to qualify them for the Europa League knockout stage. The game was overshadowed by Danny Welbeck suffering a potentially serious lower-leg injury in the first half, with the striker carried off on a stretcher after collapsing in pain. Images showed Welbeck's right ankle bent at an unnatural angle, and he immediately waved for medical attention as he writhed on the ground.

Otherwise there was little of...

Arsenal's Sokratis Papastathopoulos quickly becoming the most reliable pillar of defence

In a season of considerable flux further up the pitch -- a campaign of tweaked formations, uncertain positions and half-time substitutions -- Arsenal's defence has been surprisingly consistent under Unai Emery. It has proved either resistant to shiny new signings like Bernd Leno or Stephan Lichtsteiner or, in the case of Sokratis Papastathopoulos, the back four has congealed around an influential new face who will be sorely missed if his absence is confirmed this weekend.

In the Premier League,...

Arsenal's Sokratis Papastathopoulos, AEK Athens players to donate to Greece wildfire victims

Firefighters try to extinguish flames during a wildfire near the village of Kineta, Greece.
Wildfires have swept through the Athens suburbs in recent days as firefighters struggled to control the blaze.

Arsenal defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos and AEK Athens players are among those who will donate blood and give money to the victims of the wildfires in Greece.

At least 79 people have been killed and more than 200 have been injured near Athens in the deadliest wildfires on record in the country.

Sokratis, a Greece international who joined Arsenal from Borussia Dortmund earlier this month, owns a restaurant, Platea, with his family in southern Greece, and they plan to donate to charities offering...

Arsenal wrap up signing of Sokratis Papastathopoulos from Borussia Dortmund

Arsenal have completed a deal for Borussia Dortmund centre-back Sokratis Papastathopoulos for an undisclosed fee.

The Gunners reportedly paid around £16 million for the 30-year-old Greece international, who had a year left on his Dortmund contract and signs on a long-term deal.

Papastathopoulos, who will wear the No. 5 shirt, becomes new head coach Unai Emery's third signing after right-back Stephan Lichtsteiner arrived on a free transfer from Juventus and goalkeeper Bernd Leno joined from...

Arsenal's early transfer dealings not flashy but show a commitment to fixing defence

Arsenal's first signing of the Unai Emery era was a 34-year-old, no-nonsense defender in Stephan Lichtsteiner. Their second, if a deal for Sokratis Papastathopoulos goes through imminently, will be an almost-30-year-old, no-nonsense defender. It is a recruitment strategy that has the feel of electric shock treatment after two decades of Arsene Wenger.

But then, as he stretches his feet out under his desk at London Colney, the new head coach faces a very different scenario to that which greeted...
