The Chicago Fire have signed Dax McCarty to a two-year contract extension.

Dax McCarty has signed a two-year contract extension that will keep him with the Chicago Fire until at least 2019, the club announced on Thursday.

McCarty, 30, joined the Fire from New York Red Bulls in a shock move ahead of the 2017 season after spending more than five years with the Red Bulls.

The new deal is guaranteed until 2019 and Chicago has an option for the 2020 season.

"After taking time to reflect on the 2017 season, I've come away with a very clear picture of what the future looks like...

Dax McCarty has sights set on World Cup team in second U.S. go round

After being afforded a second chance with the U.S. national team by Bruce Arena, Dax McCarty says he's taking nothing for granted as he eyes a spot in the 23-man squad that will go to Russia for the World Cup next summer.

McCarty, 30, has had a somewhat transitional year after being traded in January from the New York Red Bulls to Chicago, which won its only Major League Soccer championship in 1998, and being given a return to the U.S. national team for the first time in six years.

"It's given me...

McCarty's U.S. call-up, Kljestan's snub illustrate the pair's divergent fortunes

The news that Dax McCarty has been called into the U.S. squad ahead of next month's World Cup qualifiers, while Sacha Kljestan has not, is a reminder that the fortunes of the two -- which once seemed to be inextricably linked -- have now diverged for good. There was a time when international...

The dejection among the group afterward was actually a sign of progress.

Last year -- in any of the past seven years, really -- the Chicago Fire would have gladly taken a road draw at the LA Galaxy and treated it as a legitimate moral victory. Yet last weekend, after letting a two-goal halftime lead turn into a 2-2 tie, the flight back to the Midwest was somber.

"That proves this team feels confident in itself," Chicago coach Veljko Paunovic told ESPN FC in a phone interview. "They know they...

U.S. Hot List: Christian Pulisic in top form, Tim Howard returns in style

After being sidelined with a serious heart condition, Clint Dempsey returned to the field, and had an immediate impact.

The first part of Bruce Arena's selection process for a critical World Cup qualifier against Honduras on March 24 and another in Panama City four days later is nearly complete, with the U.S. coach to name his roster for both games Wednesday afternoon.

The second part, of course, requires Arena to settle on a lineup for the match against Los Catrachos in San Jose, California. With just one more weekend of club games left for him to assess the sharpness of his players, here's a look at how 14 candidates...
