Philipp Lahm: Germany must stay calm to get past on- and off-field issues

MOSCOW -- Predictably, the German ambassador had to get involved in this, the most political of World Cups and, on Monday, he did.

The ambassador for Germany's Euro 2024 bid, to give him his official title, happens to be the World Cup-winning captain of four years  ago, but Philipp Lahm commented on the Nationalmannschaft's awful defeat to Mexico with such diplomatic finesse that one could be forgiven for thinking the 34-year-old had recently graduated from the foreign ministry's school for...

Philipp Lahm named honorary Germany captain, Euro ambassador

Philipp Lahm captained Germany to their 2014 World Cup triumph.

Philipp Lahm has been named as an honorary Germany captain at this year's German FA (DFB) conference.

Lahm, the national team's former captain, was also made an ambassador for Germany's bid to host the 2024 European Championship.

The 2014 World Cup winner becomes the sixth player to join the list of honorary captains after Fritz Walter, Uwe Seeler, Franz Beckenbauer, Lothar Matthaus and Jurgen Klinsmann.

Lahm retired from international football after leading Germany to the 2014 World Cup and, after...

'Emotional' Philipp Lahm vote has made award absurd - Toni Kroos agent

The decision to name Philipp Lahm as Germany's Footballer of the Year has reduced the vote "to absurdity," Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos' agent has said.

Former Germany and Bayern Munich captain Lahm, 33, won the award for the first time at the weekend.

Lahm, who retired at the end of last season, took the prize -- organised by football magazine kicker and voted for by journalists -- in an outcome that Volker Struth said left him "very surprised and astonished."

In a statement on his Sport Total...

Former Bayern Munich man Philipp Lahm has been named Germany's Footballer of the Year for 2017.

Lahm, 33, retired at the end of last season after 15 years at Bayern, in which he won a host of trophies including eight Bundesliga titles and the Champions League.

The former Germany captain saw off competition from Real Madrid's Toni Kroos and Borussia Dortmund's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to claim the award, which is organised by kicker and voted for by journalists, for the first time. Eligible...

Bayern Munich stars lead the way in kicker's biannual rankings

Manuel Neuer and Philipp Lahm were named best goalkeeper and full-back as Bayern Munich dominated kicker's German football rankings.

The magazine ranks players in all positions and divides them into four categories: world class, international class, players of note and players in focus.

Neuer, 31, who last season won his fifth consecutive Bundesliga title, was the only goalkeeper deemed world class in the magazine's prestigious biannual rankings.

Mats Hummels led the centre-back rankings while Niklas...

Bayern Munich induct Philipp Lahm into Hall of Fame after his retirement

Philipp Lahm has been inducted into Bayern Munich's Hall of Fame in a ceremony on Monday.

Former Bayern captain Lahm, 33, retired last week after clinching his eighth Bundesliga title with the club.

The ex-Germany international led the Bavarians out for the final time against Freiburg on his 517th appearance as the Bundesliga champions celebrated a fifth consecutive title.

"Last Saturday was incredibly emotional for me and my last day will remain etched in my memory forever," Lahm said.

Lahm, who...
